We were lucky enough to have a Zoom call by Dr Celeste Donato to speak to the boys about microbiology today. Dr Donato spoke to the boys about viruses, bacteria and her research at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne. The boys were fascinated when it came to looking at Covid-19 as currently Dr Donato is researching this current outbreak and how families shift Covid-19 between each other. The boys were very receptive to the presentation and had lots of questions to ask, so much so that we had to cut them off. We thank M

As part of our provocations, we headed up to the Senior School Science department to look at a fossils. We created our own fossils as part of the activity and we used magnifying glasses to look at fossils that were millions of years old. We listened to Mr Dall'Oste provoke our thoughts about fossils, what they are and how they formed. Further to this Mr Dall'Oste spoke about imagining a world without any form of greenery (grass, leaves etc) to get the boys to try and visualise what it would have been like all those years ago. Below are some images of our work. We look forward to heading to the Senior School again next week. This week the boys have been getting their first taste of Exhibition. After explaining what Exhibition is and isn't, we asked the boys to create a headline that sums up how they are currently feeling. Here is some of our work.
All the boys have looked at creating a logo for our 2020 Exhibition. We had winners from both classrooms going head to head in a final vote off on Tuesday. Well done to all the boys who put in a fair bit of dedication and creativity to create the logos this year. The logos of the finalists are listed below. At the start of Exhibition, we always go through what it actually is and what it actually isn't. This gives the boys a further understanding of the Exhibition process itself. Also considering that we have a number of new boys who have never been to a PYP school before, this helps them understand all the elements of Exhibition.
Excitement is building as the boys near the start of their PYP Exhibition.
The teachers are extremely excited with some exciting things happening from our guest speakers in the next two weeks. Not long until we start on Tuesday 25th! The boys have now been given the brief to create a logo for the PYP Exhibition. The boys need to include the following words;
How the World Works: An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment. And then figure out a logo to go alongside this. The boys finally need to choose a program to create the logo (whether digital or by hand) and submit to their respective teacher. The logo will go on our LibGuide and all formal communication going forward. On Monday, parents were informed about the Exhibition. Attached are the slides. |
